Whether you are a veteran Current user or a total n00b, you have most likely attempted to post material concerning two journalists from Current TV’s Vanguard Team and their plight in North Korea. Upon submitting it, you found out the hard way that something is going on here…something no one likes, especially on a website that prides itself as an alternative media and user run news source- Censorship.
The allegations can not be denied; Current.com is systematically censoring every story concerning Laura Ling and Euna Lee as well as comments referring to them. When you post a story, you will soon find that it is “Under Review and Temporarily Hidden” from the public eye- and it will stay that way indefinitely. So far there is NO PUBLIC STATEMENT from Current, so what you are reading here is purely my own opinion and answer to the Big Question- WHY?
Oops, did I say I had an answer? I don’t. But I have a few theories.
First of all, we can not blame the staff. It would appear that they are simply doing their job and what they are told to do. Much of the public outcry has been bashing the Current staff, but have some sympathy for them! More than likely they are just as angry, confused and upset as you are- if not more so considering many of them probably knew the journalists personally!
So what’s the deal then? I hate to sound like one of those government conspiracy theory types, but I’m thinking that’s what’s going on here. Al Gore is the head of Current, Hilary Clinton is our current Secretary of State- could that be the connection? Their shared political career during Bill Clinton’s administration causing a reason for the hush hush? Perhaps.
However, you may have noticed that it’s not just Current that is quiet on this issue, it’s pretty much everyone. The only incident of this story being seriously pursued by the main stream media was Laura and Euna’s families speaking out on Larry King. They admitted on the show that they have been asked to keep quiet as well. The silence order is coming from on high, and exactly what is going on is still unknown. Both Al Gore and Hilary Clinton have assured the public in short statements that this situation is being worked on and they are “seeking the release” of Laura and Euna.

This is such a massive cover-up, and it is really creepy that no one seems to want to talk about it. If they think that keeping the story under wraps is the best way to ensure that these women return home safely, that's one thing. But the absolute muteness of the staff on this whole censorship topic is shocking, rude, and unfortunately only serves to make people wary of Current's ways... They could at least send out emails saying SOMETHING about WHY they feel it's important to censor this story. Are they afraid that current will become a grassroots movement working towards freeing these two women? Would that necessarily be a bad thing? And if so, WHY? Can't they at LEAST have the common decency to TELL US what they're thinking when they're deleting our posts, deleting our comments, and "punishing us" by deleting pages of our Current Profile histories? Oh well, I guess we'll never know - we'll just keep getting blindly censored and punished by Big Brother.
