New Years Resolutions: Losing Weight

In a few days, I will make the same New Years Resolution that I have made every year since I can remember participating in the tradition: Lose Some Weight. I have a feeling I'm not alone; while I have no hard evidence I'd bet weight loss is the most popular New Years Resolution as well as the least likely to be accomplished.

Why have I failed over and over again? Why the yo-yo dieting and the 2 week attention span? Why the lack of motivation to exercise and activity? I don't have the answers to these questions which is certainly bothersome; how can I expect to succeed where I have failed if I am no more prepared now than any other year to do so?

Something has to give; I've gained more weight in this past year than I'd like to admit and with an upcoming marriage, the last thing I want to be thinking about is being uncomfortable. "Does this wedding dress make me look fat?" The absurdity is painful!

I have figured out at least a few steps to take this year to combat this problem and they revolve around a desire to live more ethically in general. Perhaps this is the key; it's been said a million times that you shouldn't diet at all, rather change your lifestyle; so my eating habits need to be on track with the direction I want my lifestyle to go.

I'm dubbing this lifestyle "Lean and Green" (in my head, of course, for it sounds rather foolish even to type it out!) which basically means more attention to what I eat from an environmental perspective. I'll be:

Eating locally
Cutting my meat consumption significantly
Avoiding processed/modified food
Swearing off Fast Food (I drool for a Big Mac as I write that...)
Growing my own food (I tried this last year too but my garden failed miserably...we had so much rain I didn't know too many gardeners who got decent crops!)

And of course, I'll be hitting the gym. I'd like to get back into hiking as well; I used to go a few times a month with my father but this year I don't think I got on the trail even once. For shame! I love the time away from my busy, internet obsessed life, and we have beautiful trails all around my area.

So that's it. I hope to succeed this time for REAL by making hardcore changes not only to my diet, but the way I view food in general. Anyone else out there have a plan? Share it with me!

The return of “Science is Speaking”- but I need to decide if I want to make it something consistently put out or an occasional thing.

Citizen Science- what can I do to get more involved in science around me? What can others do? Is there a network for Citizen Scientists ?

I’m sitting on at least 15 folk songs written over the last… 8 years or so that I should at least rough record.

UPDATE: JOURNALISTS RELEASED! 8-4-09 : "North Korean media say leader Kim Jong Il has pardoned two American journalists and ordered their release during the visit of former U.S. President Bill Clinton."

Whether you are a veteran Current user or a total n00b, you have most likely attempted to post material concerning two journalists from Current TV’s Vanguard Team and their plight in North Korea. Upon submitting it, you found out the hard way that something is going on here…something no one likes, especially on a website that prides itself as an alternative media and user run news source- Censorship.

The allegations can not be denied; Current.com is systematically censoring every story concerning Laura Ling and Euna Lee as well as comments referring to them. When you post a story, you will soon find that it is “Under Review and Temporarily Hidden” from the public eye- and it will stay that way indefinitely. So far there is NO PUBLIC STATEMENT from Current, so what you are reading here is purely my own opinion and answer to the Big Question- WHY?

Oops, did I say I had an answer? I don’t. But I have a few theories.

First of all, we can not blame the staff. It would appear that they are simply doing their job and what they are told to do. Much of the public outcry has been bashing the Current staff, but have some sympathy for them! More than likely they are just as angry, confused and upset as you are- if not more so considering many of them probably knew the journalists personally!

So what’s the deal then? I hate to sound like one of those government conspiracy theory types, but I’m thinking that’s what’s going on here. Al Gore is the head of Current, Hilary Clinton is our current Secretary of State- could that be the connection? Their shared political career during Bill Clinton’s administration causing a reason for the hush hush? Perhaps.

However, you may have noticed that it’s not just Current that is quiet on this issue, it’s pretty much everyone. The only incident of this story being seriously pursued by the main stream media was Laura and Euna’s families speaking out on Larry King. They admitted on the show that they have been asked to keep quiet as well. The silence order is coming from on high, and exactly what is going on is still unknown. Both Al Gore and Hilary Clinton have assured the public in short statements that this situation is being worked on and they are “seeking the release” of Laura and Euna.

So what can you do about it? Here’s some resources for petitions and political contact information:

As you may have noticed, I've redesigned this little bloggy to look better and I promise to update it more frequently. To the right you see some images; the Paintbrush leads to my online art gallery, Current Science leads to...well, the Current Science section which I curate, the headphones lead to my myspace page for music (with newer freshness to come very soon) and the Fangirl Icon leads to my nerd blog, Fangirl's World.

At the MAD site I've got some sweet FREE business card designs for all your biz needs. Just download them into Photoshop or another graphics program, type your information in and voila! Designer goods! Print them yourself on some nice cardstock or upload the image onto a site like VistaPrint.com!

Bad News:
The Live Painting show I've been raving about is apparently a bust. It was rescheduled from the 14th to the 29th, but on the 29th I ended up waiting outside of a building full of studio lofts in a shady part of Brooklyn for hours only to be disappointed when no one came to let me in- Show canceled, found out the hard way. I can't say that I'm going to try to arrange something with the YUME people because unfortunately, they've shown me that they don't care about art, artists or putting on art shows at all. I'm not the only artist who ended up being screwed over by this situation, so I feel for all of y'all who got tricked and drove out for nothing.

Good News:
I did get a show in Pawling, coming up in July, I do have a strange show in ATL (yep, Georgia!) involving many canvases sent out to artists around the country,

I currently have THREE paintings displayed on Ave A (Japanese Sushi Restaurant Gallery, 103 Avenue A NY NY.)

I'm being featured on http://www.theivorytowerzine.com/ - Click "Art" and scroll, you should see my name, click on it and see some featured art! If you click on "Meet The Artists," you'll see a pic of me and some info including a link to my online portfolio.

Some other things are being worked out, details soon...but honestly, I'm thinking about having my own art shows soon. The art scene around here needs a booster!

IMPACT Pictures

Art show pics! These pictures can also be seen on my myspace page, myspace.com/deliatheartist -in my albums, there is one labeled IMPACT. The show was really great; reBar is a cool hip spot in the DUMBO district and 5th Gear Multimedia did a great job putting everything together. Thanks to them for the opportunity, and thanks to all of my friends and family- you guys showed me such AWESOME support and it meant the world to me. I love you!

One thing you may (or may not!) notice is that I'm not dressed up, my hair isn't done, and I have NO makeup on whatsoever...I actually brought 2 outfits, a hair dryer and a crapload of make-up to the place...but never changed! I was running around so much that by the time it was 8pm (when the show started) I was still in my scrub clothes...I chose comfort over looking nice that night and I'm still on the fence about it! I felt nice but looking back at the pics I sort of wished I got a little fancier. Maybe next time!

Hello, Welcome to my New Blog!

This is another place where I'll be updating information about my art, upcoming shows, pictures and all that good stuff (plus the occasional rant or obscure nonsense!)

Thanks to everyone who recently came out to the IMPACT Art Show, it was awesome! Next time I'll have many more pictures...

Also, I'll be dropping off some art this weekend at Avenue A Japanese Sushi Restaurant Gallery- Details about when the opening will be soon!

As soon as I found out if I'm definitely able to attend, I may also be doing a Live Painting event on June 14th- I'll letcha know for sure...
